Infliximab helps with weight gain in Chrones Disease patients

Research carried out at the University of North Carolina in the US, people treated with infliximab who also have chrones disease experience weight gain which so far can not be explained.

It was reported that some crohn's disease patients put on as much as 75 pounds, which is far more than any weight gain that had been witnessed in patients with rheumatoid arthritis and treated with infliximab.

A clinical research fellow at the Universit, Cristal Brown said that chrones patients were often malnourished and that this could help if the fight against the disease. The difficult question to ask is that what if they were to push chrones disease sufferers into obesity and all the associated problems that come with that?

Chrones patients who used Infliximab gained almost five times as much weight as patients with arthritis (4.97 kg versus 1.1 kg) and some people with Crohn's gained as much as 20 to 30 kg. There was no difference in weight gain between patients with luminal versus fistulous disease or by steroid use, baseline body mass index, smoking status, or chrons disease activity. These findings were based on the records on 92 people with Chrons disease and 51 rheumatoid arthritis patients. All of whom were at least 18 years old and who had received three or more infusions of infliximab.

It is thought that many patients with the disease would probably benefit from a small weight gain as the disease often led to some degree of undernourishment, but there is a need for a larger study to determine the cause of this weight gain and the role of leptin in the weight gain.

I have often felt that how I feel in general can affect my Crohn's and like others I wonder if stress has an effect and even make the symptoms of Chrones disease worse?

As far as I have been able to ascertain there no hard evidence that stress can cause chrones disease in the fist place. However it is true to say that people who suffer with chrones do often experience the increased stress in their lives when compare to people without the disease. But this is mainly due to having to cope with a chronic illness.

I have seem some reports that suggest that people with Crohn’s disease have flare ups more often when they are going through a particularly stressful situation in their lives.

Based on this the best advice is that if you feel that there is a connection between your stress levels and a worsening of your chrones disease symptoms, try researching relaxation techniques like slow breathing exercises and possibly even meditation.

Also as always, make sure you eat well and correctly, get enough sleep and contact your doctor.

Nicotine, Smoking & Chrones Disease

The effects of Nicotine and Smoking on Chrones Disease

The general thought is that smoking cigarettes actually has a detrimental effect on Crohn's disease. The statistics show that people who smoke, or who have smoked in the past, have a bigger chance of developing Chrones than non-smokers. If you already have Crohn's disease and you smoke, you are more likely to have an increased number of relapses, repeat surgeries, and may require aggressive immunosuppressive treatment.

Most people with People Chrones disease are strongly encouraged by their doctors to stop smoking in order to prevent flare-ups of the disease.

Location of Chrones
A study conducted a few years ago and then published in The American Journal of Gastroenterology, has shown that there is a link between smoking and Chrones Disease.

What the study seemed to show is that smoking may actually decide which part of your intestinal tract is affected in people who have Crohn's Disease.

The Importance of the Findings
The importance of these findings cannot be underestimated as where chrones disease is located in your body often determines if you will need surgical treatment or not.

The results suggested that crohn's disease seems to appear more often in the small intestine and not the colon in smokers. Chrones disease located in the small intestine is often more penetrating and thus causes more damage and as a result has to be treated with surgery more often.

Ulcerative Colitis likely caused by Immune deficiency

At the Harvard School of Public Health in the US, Experiments being carried out on mice have identified an immune deficiency as the most likely cause of ulcerative colitis. Ulcerative colitis is a severe inflammatory disease of the colon and is similar to Chrones Disease. For the differences between Chrones Disease and Ulcerative colitis, take a look at my post on Chrones Disease and Ulcerative Colitis are they different?

This research also demonstrated that once mice had Ulcerative colitis, it could then be passed from mother to their offspring and even between adult animals. They also linked ulcerative colitis in mice to a deficiency of a molecule in the immune system, which would normally prevent harmful bacteria in the large intestine from breaking the bowel's protective lining and thus allow the damaging inflammation. A shortage of a protein called T-bet which usually regulates the harmful bacteria. This then allows the bacterial attack on the intestinal wall. This then causes the inflammation we know as ulcerative colitis that's identified by the open sores throughout the colon.

It is hoped that better understanding of Ulcerative Colitis will also lead to a better understanding of Chrones Disease and one day a possible cure.

Cancer Drugs used to treat Chrones Disease

New cancer drugs could help regulate body's immune system and thus help fight Chrones disease according to some researchers in the US. Known as histone deacetylases inhibitors, or HDACs, the new cancer drugs might work extremely well in blocking the over active immune systems in people who have autoimmune diseases including chrones disease.

Wayne Hancock of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia says that this treatment for Crohn's disease would improve the immune systems ability to actually regulate itself and in the one study carried out on mice, the drug helped reverse and even prevent inflammatory bowel disease as well as prevented the rejection of heart transplants in other mice.

Up till now, the drug has mostly been used in studying cancer, but that could change and more tests could soon be done for diseases like Chrones disease.

Chrones Disease and Perianal Fistulas

So what is a Fistula?

Fistulas are pretty common in people who have Chrones Disease and the basic definition is that they are abnormal connections or passageways between organs or vessels that should not normally connect to each other.

What Are Perianal Fistulas?

A perianal fistula is a abnormal connection between the anus and rectum with another organ or vessel such as the skin or the vagina.

According to research about 12 percent of people with chrones disease have Perianal fistulas, this is a huge amount as there are said to be at least half a million people with Crohn's disease in the US alone. Anal fistulas can lead to a big drop in the quality of life for anyone who has them as they can cause anal incontinence and infections.

How are Fistulas treated?

Surgery
Surgery is currently the main form of treatment, which is invasive as well as having a fairly poor success rate.

Anti TNF-alpha and drugs like Remicade (Infliximab) are also now used. The success rate of this treatment varies from patient to patient.

Cx401 (Still in development)
Cx401 is an non-embryonic (autologous) stem cell product developed by Cellerix from human adipose tissue. This autologous source offers clear advantages over other alternatives such as bone-marrow, including easier access to the stem cells and higher yield (100 to 1,000 times). Using a minimal amount of fat drawn from the patient, it is possible to obtain stem cells that have an extraordinary capacity to facilitate the healing process of fistulas.

How will the CX401 treatment work?
The treatment consists of the extraction, expansion and re-administration of the patient's own cells into the area that has fistulas. The natural healing of the fistula tract is achieved through the anti-inflammatory properties of Cx401.

So far there have been excellent clinical results obtained to date with the product. In a study to evaluate feasibility and safety of Cx401, it was confirmed that it has the potential to treat fistulas in Chrones Disease patients and showed a 75% response rate only 8 weeks after the initial treatment.

Chrones Disease and Pregnancy

Because chrones disease often affects women of child-bearing age, I thought I would take a look at what the complications are of having Chrones disease whilst pregnant:

Risk of an early Birth
There have been some recent studies carried out at the Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark by Dr. Bente Norgard and what they have shown that having an active chrones disease (a flare-up) during your pregnancy raises the risk of having a pre-term birth. This risk was shown to be three times higher in women with active chrones disease.

The researchers looked at the impact of chrones disease in 86 women with inactive Chrones disease during pregnancy (chrones in remission) and 71 women who had low to moderately high active chrones disease during their pregnancy.

What they also found is that women with the active chrones disease during their pregnancy, were shown the risks of giving birth to a child of low birth weight and congenital abnormalities were not increased, compared to the women with inactive chrones disease.

Overall the best advice is if you have crohn's disease and you are wanting to have a baby is to first get the disease under control and in remission. It is also important to work closely with your doctors who will be able to advise you and to point out the medications that you can and cannot take during the pregnancy.

Flare Up's & Chrones Disease

Often when we hear people speak of Chrones disease, the term Flare up is also used, so what exactly is a flare up and what can be done to help?

What is a Flare-up in Chrones Disease?
Chrones disease is described as both a chronic and relapsing condition.

Chronic: means that the Chrones is ongoing
Relapsing: means that every so often the symptoms associated with Chrones disease will relapse, return and this is know as a "flare-up."
Remission: This is the time between flare-ups when you don't show and Chrones disease symptoms.

The time spent in remission or between flare-ups varies form person to person, but often your very first flare up is the worst, so atleat things should get better once you get through the first flare-up.

Help with getting through a flare-up
If you experience the return of your Chrones symptoms, I would first of all immediately seek medical advice as they can make you very ill and should not be taken lightly.

If you can't get to see a doctor for any reason, the first thing you need to do stop what you are doing and get into a bed! This is realy important as your body needs rest to recover, get friends to help with the house chores, this is very important.

You will also need to start on a clear liquid diet, again you are going to have to be strict with yourself. ilke the rest of your body, your stomach needs the rest in order to recover from the chrones flare-up and go back into remission.

Clear liquid diet?
This means Non-carbonated drinks. Fizzy carbonated drinks can agrivate the stomach and intestines. During the recovery, it is vitally important to keep your body well hydrated at all times so drink plenty of water, a good idea is to sip water all through the day. On top of this you should at least once and preferably twice a day drink an energy drink. Something like Gatorade, Energade or Propel as these enery drinks will help your body replenish electrolytes.

You should also try and take Soup Broths, Jelly (Jell-O) and Popsicles (lollies). Don't eat pudding or ice cream.

Even now when you are in bed and on a clear liquid diet, it is important for you to get some sort of medical attention as you may need antibiotics and other medication.

Chrones disease can and is often very difficult to live with and manage and because you have an chronic, relapsing autoimmune disease, your life may and often will have to revolve around the disease. Whist in remission try and maintain a healthy body and stomach by eating correctly. It is also important to maintain a positive state of mind as this will help keep your chrones disease in remission.

Chrones Disease in Children

A large percentage of those people who have Chrones Disease are children, as well as a high percentage of people with Ulcerative Colitis are also children and it is not that uncommon to see an example of a child with Chrones at only 7 years old and it is thought that in all Chrones Disease cases, 20% are affecting children under 15.

Chrones can have different problems for children, like Nutritional deficiency this is especially seriouse for children as they are still growing and Crohn's disease in children can actually lead to stunted growth. If you are a child with Chrones, your doctor may recommend nutritional supplements. There has also bee some recent research where children with Chrons disease have been helped with a growth hormone, this research is still in it's infancy, but the initial findings have been encouraging.

There is no difference in the number of boys or girls that get Chrones Disease, but children who are born into a family with a history of the disease are far more likely to develop Chrones and possibly at an early age.

Apart from the growth problems faced by children with Chrones disease, it is also very important to remember that a child with Chrones disease will have to face certain self image issues which can be particularly important for them at this time in their development. Chrones disease will separate them from normal child activities and therefore,these children will need a strong support base from their family, friends and doctors to help them not only with their physical health , but with their social and mental well being.

Chrones Disease and Ulcerative Colitis are they different?

The simple answer is, yes. Chrones disease is different to ulcerative colitis although in many ways they are quite similar and it is quite common for an incorrect diagnosis to be given.

In which ways do Chrones Disease and ulcerative colitis differ?

Ulcerative colitis causes an inflammation only in the colon (which is called the colitis) and or the rectum. On the other hand Crohn's disease can cause inflammation in your rectum, colon, small intestine and sometimes even in your stomach, mouth and oesophagus.

The actual inflammation in Chrones disease is also different from ulcerative colitis because except in the very worst cases, the inflammation of ulcerative colitis only seems to affect the superficial layers of the inner lining of the bowel, whilst that of Chrones can be much worse. The inflammation of Chrones disease tends to be concentrated in some areas more than others and affects layers of the bowel that are deeper than the superficial inner layers. Therefore, the affected areas of the bowel in Chrons disease often has deeper ulcers with normal lining between these ulcers.

So as you can see whilst the two diseases are similar in many respects, they are also different.

Newish Drug Could Help Chrones Disease Patients

Naltrexone in the past has been used to treat people who abuse drugs and alcohol, but now it could also be helping people with Chrones Disease. That is according to some recent research.

the research was conducted by Doctors in the USA and involved a small number of chrones patients, their findings found that some peoples symptoms of Chrons Disease actually went into remission when they took the drug (Naltrexone).

So what is Naltrexone?
Naltrexone is an opioid or narcotic antagonist and what it does is it blocks narcotics. The good news is that the drug Naltrexone has approval from the FDA to ease drug and alcohol withdrawal symptoms, and so because of this it could also be used to help people suffering with Chrones disease.

Dr. Smith who was working on the research commented: "We don't understand the mechanism of how it works in Crohn's disease, but there are opioid proteins on inflammatory cells, so by using Naltrexone it does reverse the inflammation and it also causes healing of the ulcers in the intestine"

The patients took one low-dose pill at bedtime and showed minimal side effects. There was about About 89 percent of patients showed some sort of improvement with Naltrexone and 67 percent had total remission of their symptoms. With these positive findings, the ideas is conduct larger scale studies which can only be good news for people suffering with Chrones Disease.

What to expect if you are diagnosed with Chrones Disease

I feel that with anything in life and especially an illness like chrones disease, it is important to get all the facts, some of them may not be pretty, but for me at least if I have an idea of what to expect, I can then prepare myself for it. So here is what to expect if you are diagnosed with Chrones disease, warts and all!

When I was first told that I had Chrones disease the idea was very frightening, especially as there were so many unknowns. Even the doctors could not be totally sure of everything that was going to happen to me! So what can you expect? Well here are a few of the facts:

People with Chrones disease often go through periods of improvement which are then followed by deterioration and the experience increased symptoms again sometimes these periods of remission can go on for years. If you have chrones, you have an increased risk of small bowel or colorectal carcinoma.

Complications associated with Chrones Disease

You can get fistulas in the following areas:

Bladder
Vagina
Skin

Bowel obstructions
Abscess
Nutritional deficiencies (commonly vitamin B12 deficiency)
Complications of corticosteroid therapy
Erythema nodosum
Pyoderma gangrenosum
Inflammation of the joints
Lesions in the eye
Impaired growth and sexual development in children

Many of the words above are rather big and frightening, don't worry we will go through them over time in this blog. remember with chrones, knowledge is power!

Treatments for Chrones Disease

One of the first thing that you may be wondering if you are diagnosed with chrones disease, is what kind of treatments are available ad what to expect. I am sure that your doctor will go through most of this with you, but here is what I found from a little research for both you and myself:

If you have Chrones disease you could be given medications like 5-aminosalicylate this will be to control the inflammatory process.

If the treatment of 5-aminosalicylate is not effective or if your case of crohn's is very severe, you may require corticosteroids and immunomodulators such as azathioprine or 6-mercaptopurine.

If you have any fistulas or abscesses you may be given antibiotics to fight against it. Infliximab which is an antibody to an immune chemical called TNF-alpha, which promotes inflammation. This treatment can work for people with fistulous disease.

If medical treatment and the drugs above have no effect, or do not work, you may need surgery where the segment of your bowel which has the Chrones disease will be removed. Unfortunately though, unlike ulcerative colitis the removal of a diseased portion of the intestine does not cure Chrones disease.

Up to this point in time, there has been no concrete evidence that a specific diet has been shown to either worsen or improve someones Crohn's disease. But as with everyone and probably more so with people suffering with Chrones disease, it is very important that you maintain a good intake of calories, vitamins, and protein is important. The foods that make your diarrhoea worse should be avoided and specific food problems may vary from person to person.

Chrones Disease Symptoms

Diagnosing Chrones Disease is often very difficult, as chrones disease symptoms can vary from person to person and is also pretty similar to the symptoms of Ulcerative colitis. Chrones disease can also begin at any age, but it does seem though that the times of the highest risk are between adolescence and a persons early adulthood.

The current thinking is that there is a genetic link to Chrones disease and it seems that people with a Jewish ancestry seem to have a higher risk of developing Crohn's Disease.

Smoking and Chrones Disease
Smoking also seems to increase the risk of Chrones.

Chrones disease is fairly common with about 7 people in every 100,000 developing the disease.

Below are some of the main Symptoms of Chrons Disease:

* Fever
* Diarrhea
* A Loss of appetite
* Weight loss
* Abdominal sounds (gurgling or splashing sound heard over the intestine)
* Fatigue and tiredness
* Bleeding from the anus
* Gastrointestinal bleeding
* Tenesmus - which means pain with passing a stool
* Stools that are Foul-smelling
* Pain in your Abdomen

In my post today I have decided to go over a few more of the facts, causes and symptoms of Chrones Disease.

What exactly is Chrones Disease?
Chrones disease is defined as a chronic autoimmune disease which can affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract but most commonly occurs in the ileum, the ileum is the area where your large and small intestines meet.

Chrones Disease are there other names for the disease?
Firstly the correct spelling of Chrones Disease is actually Crohn's Disease, I use Chrones every time im when im not really thinking about it, and have found that so do many other people and so this blog is really for people who like me keep forgetting how to spell it - now it has just stuck! Other names for chrones are: Inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn's disease, Regional enteritis, Ileitis and Granulomatous ileocolitis. Chrones disease is similar to ulcerative colitis but is not the same. (more of the differences between Chrones disease and ulcerative colitis later)

What are the causes of Chrones disease?
Chrones is an autoimmune disease, which means that your immune system attacks your body's own cells. In the Autoimmune disorder in Chrones disease, these 'bad' immune cells attack the gastrointestinal system. The actual cause of why this happens is still not known, but there seems to be some sort of a link to genetics.

In Chrones disease this often happens in the ileum, where the end of the small intestine joins the large intestine. But chrones can also affect any other part of your digestive system. What happens is the wall in your intestines thickens and deep ulcers often occur well as your digestive system chrones disease can also affect other organs in your body and may cause, Skin rash, Fistulas which are abnormal connections between your digestive system and adjacent organs or skin, Liver inflammation, arthritis, your eyes can become inflamed, kidney stones and deep vein thrombosis.

I have had a few queries from people asking what is Chrones Disease? (which is correctly spelt Crohn's disease)

Basically Chrones disease is a chronic and debilitating inflammatory disease of the
gastrointestinal tract that is incurable. Chrones disease usually occurs in people between the ages of 18-25, but can begin much later in life as well.

Because Chrones disease is chronic, patients often go through unpredictable periods in which the disease flares up and the symptoms of the disease re-appear. Then these periods are followed by periods of remission where the symptoms disappear or decrease and the person with chrones appears to be in good health.

Throughout the world, the west has the highest percentage of chrones disease sufferers, with Canada having one of the highest rates in the world.

The cause of Chrones disease is not really known but it is believed to be an autoimmune disease that has links to genetics. The condition occurs when the immune system contributes to damage of the gastrointestinal tract by causing inflammation.

As mentioned earlier, there is currently no known medical or surgical cure for Chrones disease, unlike the other major type of IBD called ulcerative colitis.

Many people live with Chrones disease for many years and dont know that they have it until the usual onset of chrones disease between the ages of 15 and 30. There are no difference in numbers or chances of getting the disease between men and women.

Chrones disease can cause a variety of symptoms that include Growth failure which is common in children who have Chrones disease. Infact many children are first diagnosed with Chrones disease based on inability to maintain normal growth.

Older people who have Chrones disease may show weight loss coupled with decreased food intake, since individuals with intestinal symptoms from Chrons disease often feel better when they do not eat and might lose their appetite. This is often one of the fist signs that a person has Chrones Disease.

There has been some excellent news for those of you with Chrons disease, an inflammatory bowel condition (IBD) and who are living in Australia as it has been announced that sufferers will be able to receive susidised treatments.

Remicade
Remicade (infliximab) will be added to the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme in Ausralia (PBS). The Minister for Health in Australia, said Chrones disease has a huge effect on the professional, family and social life of sufferers and that the Australian Government would do what it could to help.

Florida man says that by following scriptures from the bible, he was able to beat Chrones Disease.

Jordan Rubin who now lives in Florida and the author of "The Makers Diet" says that out of the many thousands of diet books being printed every year, the oldest one is the the best. He goes on to say that by eating "whole, living and nutrient-rich foods" that are described in the bible he was able to overcome Chrones disease.

Almost a decade ago the doctors told Jordan that his chrones disease was incurable, but according to him, he has manage to beat his disease after researching the Bible's "4,000-year-old health plan." It must be noted that he has used these ideas to found a health company, Garden of Life Inc.

So has Jordan Rubin rediscovered something that has been missed by modern Western medicine? Or is he just using conventional wisdom by not eating pork and red meat and eating plenty of natural foods?

I found this video the other day, it is a touching story of a guy with Chrones Disease. The backing music is by Perl Jam - the reason for this and is not something I knew until now is that the Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready suffers from Chrones Disease.

He announced this news way back in 2003 and said that he has had the stomach ailment for the past 15 years, so 20 years now. The reason he decided to go public with the news was because of the strength of a young teenager who'd suffered through 6 surgeries because of chrones and still had a long way to go.

During his speech, Mike McCready recountered a particularly embarrassing incident to demonstrate how Chrones can strike at any time. He said that whilst playing onstage, he is always aware of where the bathrooms are "When Crohn's hits, I have to run, or it won't be pretty. It happened when we opened up for the Rolling Stones in 1997 in Oakland .

"It was our first show with them," McCready continues. "Five minutes before we went on, I went up to (Pearl Jam front man) Eddie Vedder and I said, 'Look man, can we play 'Sometimes'? — which is a slower song that I'm not really on. I was in pain. I went running offstage looking for a bathroom, and there wasn't one. Then, all of a sudden, there was one. It was a honey bucket. I heard my band play that song from inside a portable toilet!" something every chrones disease sufferer knows all to well!

Tysabri Approved for Chrones Disease Treatment

People with Chrones Disease have some excellent news in that the US Food and Drug Administration has approved the use of a drug called Tysabri (natalizumab) to treat people with chrones disease who have not yet responded to other forms of treatment.

Tysabri has potentially some pretty serious side effects and because of this people with chrones disease who are using the drug Tysabri will also be enrolled in a program that restricts distribution called Crohn's Disease-Tysabri Outreach Unified Commitment to Health (CD-TOUCH). Some of the possible side effects of Tysabri include anaphylactic reactions,possible liver injury, progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (a viral infection that affects the brain. This viral infection could cause severe disability or even death.)

The CD-TOUCH program will allow physicians to check people with chrones disease that are using Tysabri after three months, if there is no sign of improvement Tysabri will no longer be perscribed.

Tysabri was approved way back in 2006 for the treatment of patients suffering from elapsing multiple sclerosis and now has to go ahead to be used on Chrones Disease sufferers. It is produced by Elan, a company based in Ireland as well as Biogen Idec in the US and will used on patients with chrones who have yet to respond to any other forms of treatment

In Australia, some research has found that infant milk formula containing added fruit sugars could be the cause to some stomach disorders like Chrones disease, irritable bowel syndrome and ulcerative colitis in children.

Apparently, some of the new children's milk formula, including big brands like Nutricia and Aptamil contain prebiotics which are supposed to improve the digestion such as fructose could actually be doing more harm that good. This is especially the case for children who may already be susceptible to diseases like Chrones disease.

A Gastroenterology expert, Prof Peter Gibson is concerned about the trend towards adding prebiotics to children's formula. He says that "Excessive intake of sugars that escape digestion and absorption in the small intestine contribute to susceptibility and symptom generation in Chrones disease, irritable bowel syndrome and ulcerative colitis."

In the Western diet, The excessive intake of these sugars is common, This could possibly be one of the reasons why Chrones disease is so uncommon in places like Africa?

People with Chrones disease or IBS who remove these foods from their diet seem to get allot better. Prof Peter Gibson's team measured the prebiotic contents of food in the Australian diet in order to generate a nutritional database. The study found more than half of the 52 patients with Chrons disease who removed prebiotics from their food improved their symptoms. So it seems that prebiotics which provide good bacteria to maintain good digestive health but are likely to make Chrones disease and IBS symptoms worse.

Some recent research suggests that Early exposure to farm animals lowers the risk of Chrones Disease or ulcerative colitis (IBD)

The conclusions of a German study published in the journal Pediatrics say that if you are exposed to farm animals often when a child or baby you are less likely than others to develop Chrones disease or ulcerative colitis during your childhood. This is according to the findings .

In Germany there are over 10000 children and young adults who suffer from either chrones disease or ulcerative colitis (inflammatory bowel disease / IBD) according to Dr. Katja Radon at Ludwig-Maximilians-University, Munich.

Chrones Disease in the first world
In industrialized countries like the UK, Germany and the USA, there has been a recent increase in Crohn's disease (a type of inflammatory bowel disease) suggests that there are environmental factors that contribute to chrones disease.

The German team examined the link between contact with farm animals as a baby and the development of Chrones disease or ulcerative colitis in childhood. The findings were analysed for 748 people with IBD, 444 with Chrones disease, 304 with ulcerative colitis and 1,481 healthy children who were used as the control.

The restults showed that the children with inflammatory bowel disease were more likely than the control children to live in urban areas and regular contact with farm animals during the first year of life was inversely associated with IBD, the investigators report.

The children with chrones disease or ulcerative colitis were about 50 percent less likely to have regular contact with farm animals in infancy compared with the healthy children.So these findings seem to indicate that contact with farm animal during infancy is one of the major factors protecting children against allergies and might also decrease the risk of Chrones Disease or ulcerative colitis in children Radon's team concludes. The findings also back up the theory that allergic diseases and IBD might have similar paths of development.

Chrones Disease: It is still a mystery but can be controlled

When Jessica Leach was only 12 when she started having frequent attacks of painful abdominal cramps and was only later to find out that it was Chrons disease, she is now 19 years old and initially, she didn't tell anyone about the pain or the diarrhea.

Jessica would often respond to her parents questions by saying that it was somethiong in the food that didnt agree with her. She could hide it for a while, but soon she began to loose a lot of weight and that was when her parents realised that there must be something really worng and so decided to take her to the doctors.

Initially the doctors first thought that she might have anorexia, which only led to frustration on the behalf of Jessica and her mother. The just goes to show how easy it can be to give the wrong diagnosis of Chrones Disease. After some more blood work and a visit to a gastroenterologist, the family finally got the right diagnosis: Chrones disease.

Jessica's chrones is currently in remission for the second time, the first time lasted for three years and she is hoping like most people who suffer from crohn's disease that her symptoms will never appear again. What ever happens Jessica is adiment that Chrones disease is not going to get her down and want to live her life to the full. She has been working two jobs this summer and she is looking forward to college.

Gene variant raises risk of Chrones disease

At a children's hospital in Philadelphia, Pediatric researchers in a have identified a gene variant that raises the risk of Chrones disease amongst Children.

Some German researchers had also previously found the same gene variant in the adult form of Chrones disease and this new research backs up their findings.

"Because Chrones disease is complex, with multiple genes interacting with each other and with environmental factors, it's important to sort out specific genes and to replicate previous findings," said the study's first author, Robert N. Baldassano, M.D., director of the Center for Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease at Children's Hospital. "There are different types of Chrones disease, so classifying types by genetic profiles may help us select the most appropriate treatments for each patient."

The comprehensive study compared the genomes of One hundred and forty three children with Chrones disease to genomes of 282 children who did not have the disease. In the results, they discovered that Sixty four percent of children with Crohn's disease had a specific variant form of the gene ATG16L1, compared with 52 percent of the healthy children. The odds ratio for children with the gene variant was 1.62 compared to control children, all this means that children who have the variant are 62 percent more likely to have Chrones disease than children with the more common form.

I guess the more studies done like this will all lead to more understanding of Chrones disease and hopefully lead to better treatments and possibly a cure one day.

Affecting nearly 1 million people around the world, Chrones disease is a chronic inflammation of the bowel and intestines. People who have Chrones disease often have diarrhea and abdominal pain. About 80% of people with Chrones disease will also eventually will face some sort of surgery to remove damaged portions of bowel.

Having said all that, there is some good news, as the science finally catches up with chrones disease with modern treatments like anti-inflammatory medications called TNF blockers which have had very good results for many patients.

Two new chrones disease drugs are about to hit the market, so things could and should soon improve further for Crohn's disease patients.

In the USA, the Food and Drug Administration advisory committee recommended approval of the drug called Tysabri as a medication for Chrones disease. Tysabri is already used for treating patients with multiple sclerosis. This recommendation will allow the FDA to move toward approval of Tysabri for Chrones.

The second new drug is called Cimzia, which was effective at treating about one-third of 1,330 patients with moderate to severe Chrones disease in testing. As well as this, 62% of the chrones patients who responded to Cimzia continued to benefit from the treatment after 6 months. The Belgian company who is developing Cimzia is planning to receive approval from the Food and Drug Administration advisory committee soon.

So there is hopefully some good news on the horizon for Chrones Disease sufferers.

In a strange kind of way, when you are going through a very bad patch with your chrones disease and you feel that everything is against you, it sometimes helps to know that there are many people who have chrones disease and continue to live extra ordinary lives.

A great example of this is David Garrard who is a quarter back for the Jacksonville Jaguars and has Chrones disease.

I often have days when I don't even feel like getting out of bed let alone going out and playing professional football!

Recently I was invited to go camping with some friends and my first though was that I could not do it, but then I though of the people out there who have chrones disease like David Garrard, who are doing things that even people without chrones disease would find difficult. It gave me that little push that I needed....

New Diet is said to help people with chrones disease and ulcerative colitis.

A new low carbohydrate diet has the potential to help people who suffer with Chrones disease and people with ulcerative colitis, the research has been carried out by Dr Richard Gearry who is a senior lecturer at Otago Universitys Christchurch School of Medicine in New Zealand.

Both Chrones disease and ulcerative colitis are forms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

To ensure that the diet was low in carbohydrates, the 100 people who took part in the experiment had to reduce the amount of wheat, onions, milk, ice cream, apples, honey and stone fruits in their diet. It was also found that legumes could cause abdominal pain and diarrhoea in people who have chrones disease.

This research took place at Box Hill Hospital in Victoria in Australia and involved a hundred patients who have either chrones disease or ulcerative colitis. Patients followed the diet for six to eight weeks. The diet was also designed so that the taste was not too bad and that it was easy to follow. This was becaue they wanted as many people as possible to follow the diet for the full duration.

The results showed that some of the carbohydrates and sugars are not absorbed into the stomach and because of this they get into the colon where they ferment and produce gas which causes pain, these were presented to the Australian Gastroenterology Week conference in Perth.

The hope that it will go on to help many people who suffer with chrons disease and ulcerative colitis.

The father and son team of Allan and Neil Farimond, aim to tackle the Pyrenees on a gruelling 13-day bike trek in aid of the National Association for Colitis and Chrones Disease. This is a charity is important to them as Neil's son Matthew has Chrones disease as well as many other members of their extended family.

68 years young Allan has actually finished the trek before and is the more experienced of the team. The aim is to raise at least £1000 (about US$1900) for the National Association for Colitis and Chrones Disease.
